About this test

A seafood allergy is a common type of food allergy and can cause serious allergic reactions in some people. If someone with a seafood allergy eats or comes across products containing seafood proteins your immune system activates the release of too much of the antibody IgE. IgE activation causes the release of a substance called histamine, which causes an allergic reaction. Individuals allergic to one type of seafood may not necessarily have an allergy to all seafood.

Shellfish, like fish, peanuts, and tree nuts are commonly associated with severe, potentially life-threatening reactions. There is a high degree of cross-reactivity among the crustacean shellfish (shrimp, lobster, crab, crawfish).

A food allergy may affect the skin, gastrointestinal tract, or respiratory or cardiovascular systems. Many types of foods can be allergens, but certain foods are much more likely than others to trigger an allergic reaction.

In this type of food allergy, your body's immune system makes IgE antibodies that react with certain food. Antibodies are a type of blood protein used by your immune system to recognize and fight infection. An IgE-mediated allergic reaction usually occurs within several hours of eating the food allergen and can include mild to severe symptoms, including anaphylaxis. Do you have allergy symptoms and seafood might be the cause? Our Seafood Allergy Test Panel measures your immune system response to specific seafood proteins, which can be part of helping to determine whether you have an allergy.
